  • Why Trying Harder Isn’t Always the Answer

When you’re stuck on a problem for a few days, frustration starts to build more quickly each time you attempt to solve it. Some people give up entirely, while others keep going despite the lack of progress. In those moments, it can feel like you don’t know anything at all. Self-doubt creeps in, and you begin to believe you’ll never figure it out.

Day after day, you try without success. You search for the answer online, experimenting with different keywords and hoping someone, somewhere, has asked the same question or faced the same problem—and received a solution. Yet, despite all your effort, you have nothing to show for it except a hundred ways not to fix the issue.

Just when you’re at your wit’s end, you make a decision—to let go. Let the solution come to me, you think. You choose to shift your focus to another part of your project, or maybe something entirely unrelated. You do anything you can to take your mind off the problem. One helpful method is to create a small win for yourself: something simple you can learn or achieve that boosts your confidence and makes you feel good.

When you remove yourself from the immediate pressure of the problem, your mind doesn’t stop working on it—it just works differently. That’s why answers often come to you in the shower or while doing something mundane. Your subconscious mind is piecing together all the information you’ve gathered. It processes the problem from a new angle, offering up fresh insight. It’s like your mind takes on a bird’s-eye view, seeing the bigger picture that was previously hidden in the details.

By gaining that broader perspective, you can see the problem in a new light. And new perspectives often bring new solutions. Sometimes, all it takes is shifting your approach or looking at the issue from a different angle to unlock the answer. And with that spark of insight comes a burst of energy and renewed motivation to return to the task.

Taking a step back allows your mind the space it needs to connect the dots—to organize the research, untangle your thoughts, and make sense of everything you’ve absorbed. In many cases, stepping away from the problem isn’t giving up; it’s a smarter strategy. It can be far more effective than simply trying harder.

That said, persistence is still key. Progress might feel invisible when hours or even days go by without a breakthrough. But know this: all the brainstorming, research, and failed attempts are not wasted. They’re part of the process. Each misstep is a clue, helping you rule out what doesn’t work.

The only way you’re guaranteed not to solve the problem is by quitting. The difference between those who give up and those who don’t often comes down to emotional management. Frustration is universal when things don’t go our way—but those who persevere don’t let it cloud their thinking. They take a breath, refocus, and, when needed, try a new approach.

You might not need to push harder. You might just need a different perspective.

    Stop trying harder. Try differently.

    Take care.
