  • The Feynman Technique: Learn Faster by Teaching Simply

What is the Feynman technique? At its core, it’s about learning by teaching. By simplifying a concept enough to explain it clearly to others, you strengthen both your understanding and your ability to communicate. This method also sharpens critical thinking and communication skills.

The idea is simple: take the concept you want to learn and break it down so that even a 10-year-old could understand it. In doing so, you force yourself to clarify your own thoughts and deepen your understanding.

The Feynman technique involves four steps:

    1. Choose a topic – Select something that interests you and that you want to understand better.
    2. Study it – Read, research, and take notes until you feel comfortable with the material.
    3. Explain it simply – Break down the complex ideas into everyday language and share them, either by writing them out or speaking them aloud.
    4. Review and refine – Identify gaps in your understanding, revisit the material, and simplify it even further.

It’s important to note that thinking you understand something is different from being able to explain it. When you try to verbalize your knowledge, gaps often become clear—especially if others don’t follow what you’re saying. This is valuable feedback: it shows where you need to refine your understanding.

Explaining what you’ve learned doesn’t require a classroom. You can practice during dinner with family, in casual conversations with friends, or even by teaching yourself out loud. The more you explain, the more feedback you’ll receive, and the easier it becomes to spot areas where you need to improve.

The Feynman technique is a cycle. Choose a topic, study it, simplify your notes, explain it, get feedback, and refine your explanation. Use real-life examples, analogies, and metaphors to make the concept clearer. Repeat the process until you can explain it to anyone, anywhere, anytime.

Teaching others strengthens your own knowledge. Simplifying what you’ve learned increases the chances that others will understand it, too. As Albert Einstein once said, “If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough.”

Keep practicing, keep refining, and soon you’ll find that teaching is one of the best ways to master learning.

    Take care.
