  • Why Do We Stop Something We Love?

Most of us have quit something we once loved, often without even realizing it. To feel better, we create excuses for our decision: “It wasn’t for me,” “I wasn’t even trying,” or “It got boring.” But deep down, we know these reasons are just masks for something bigger—fear of failure, embarrassment, or judgment.

Why do we quit something we once enjoyed? One of the main reasons is that it becomes challenging. What was once easy becomes difficult, and the thought of failing at something we used to excel at feels unbearable. Our ego steps in, whispering, “This isn’t worth it. Let’s move on. There’s no place for us here.”

When things get hard, we often convince ourselves that quitting is the logical choice. But from another person’s perspective, these excuses might seem weak or unconvincing. Why should we settle for giving up so easily? Instead, let’s take pride in ourselves and our ability to face challenges head-on.

What if, instead of fearing the difficulty, we viewed it as a new beginning? The joy we felt when we first started—when we were learning, discovering, and making mistakes—is still within reach. Changing your perspective can help you approach challenges with curiosity rather than fear. Embrace the feeling of starting fresh, and let that mindset energize you to keep going.

But why do we only seem to have motivation at the beginning of a journey? Why do we quit every time things get tough or when we don’t see immediate results?

That’s the test. When life becomes challenging, it’s as though the universe is asking, “How much do you really want this?” It presents resistance not as punishment but as a way to force us to grow. Are you going to push back, or will you succumb to the pressure?

Or maybe the resistance isn’t external at all. Perhaps we’re protecting ourselves from failure, letting our survival instincts take over. Whatever the reason, the process remains the same: we need to quiet the voice of self-doubt.

This isn’t easy. It’s a constant battle to overcome the fear of failure and embarrassment. But it’s possible. The key is to reframe failure—not as something to fear but as an essential part of learning. One way to do this is by “failing small.” Start with low-stakes challenges, like playing a new card game online and accepting losses as part of the learning process. By practicing small failures, you train your mind to handle setbacks and build resilience.

The mind is a muscle. Like any muscle, it needs consistent training. What works for someone else might not work for you, and that’s okay. There’s no universal manual for self-discovery and growth. You need to ask yourself, “Where can I find the tools and strategies that work for me? How can I start my journey of failing and learning without fear of judgment?”

We all want a life free of embarrassment and judgment while still being recognized for doing great things. But here’s the paradox: to achieve greatness, we must step out of our comfort zones, risk failure, and sometimes face embarrassment. That’s the price of growth.

When we quietly quit something we once loved, we think we’re sparing ourselves embarrassment or failure. But in reality, we’re giving up on the opportunity to grow. Challenges aren’t a sign to stop—they’re a call to level up. So, instead of retreating into the comfort of excuses, take a moment to reflect. What have you quietly walked away from, and why? Is it time to revisit it, face the discomfort, and rediscover the joy that made you fall in love with it in the first place? Life may be full of obstacles, but on the other side of those challenges lies fulfillment—and that’s worth fighting for.

    Take care.
